CSA Member Handbook

Farm-Fresh Food, From Our Family's Fields to Your Family's Table.

About the Farm

Hello!
‍
On behalf of the entire Foothill Roots farm-ily, we want to express our sincere gratitude for trusting us to be your local food provider. Growing vegetables and fruits is the conduit we use to serve our local community. We want our CSA program and farm to be a place to connect with friends, family and neighbors, a place of beauty, fun, and inspiration.

We love hearing your stories of cooking adventures, news of lowered cholesterol levels, and children who will only eat carrots from our farm, so please share every chance you get! Every step we take as farmers is to grow better. We are always learning and discovering, innovating, becoming more efficient, and adapting in order to become better more educated farmers. We invite you to grow with us through the years.

Consider this handbook a "user manual" to familiarize yourself with the inner workings of our CSA. If you have any questions after reading, don’t hesitate to email us any time.

Looking forward to seeing you at pickup!

Your farmers,
Diane & Patrick

Our Practices

We grow Certified Organic produce using sustainable, regenerative practices that not only protect the land but also ensure that the food you receive is nutrient-dense, fresh, and full of flavor. By working in harmony with nature, we improve soil health, which leads to healthier crops for you and your family.

‍

By supporting these practices, you're not only getting the best from the land but also investing in a healthier, more resilient food system for the future.

  • Cover crops: Our use of cover crops and compost naturally enriches the soil, resulting in more nutritious and robust vegetables.
  • Minimal till: Minimal tillage helps preserve the soil structure, which supports beneficial microbes and reduces erosion, contributing to cleaner, healthier food.
  • Crop rotation: Crop rotation breaks pest and disease cycles, ensuring your produce is free from harmful chemicals while maintaining its exceptional quality.

Member Tips & Resources

Preserving Your Produce

We get it—bringing home a box bursting with fresh, unfamiliar produce can be a bit overwhelming. No worries! Consider us your culinary compass, steering you with fresh recipes and tips.

‍

Storage Tips:

‍

We harvest our produce at its prime, ensuring peak freshness and longevity compared to grocery store counterparts. Follow these tried and true tips to make that farm-fresh flavor last:

  • Get your farm box to a cool location ASAP. Nothing ruins fresh produce faster than the hot sun! If you’re out running errands, we recommend making the farm your last stop to avoid spoilage. If you get delivery, please be sure you have a shady spot for us to leave your box.
  • Take the tops off your carrots and beets right away when you get home to preserve freshness.
  • Wash, dry, and store your greens in a bag (our favorites here!) with some wet paper towels and place in the fridge.

Remember to thoroughly wash all produce before consuming!

Kitchen Tools & Gadgets

Level up from CSA Member to CSA Master with tools and gadgets handpicked to help you maximize the enjoyment of your farm box.

  • Salad spinner: Quickly clean and dry CSA produce, saving time and ensuring freshness. Efficient, convenient, and enhances longevity.
  • Good kitchen knives, along with a knife sharpener (or local business who sharpens knives!).
  • Reusable glass containers and mason jars to keep your food as farm-fresh as possible.
  • Sheet pans for roasting delicious veggies!
  • Food processor: The one “big-ticket” item we recommend. Use it for making salsa, pesto, pizza dough, and pureeing items like soups and sauces.
